Customer Review: Mixed bag, especially for the beginner
This would be a far-better product if the tutorial disc--which comes with the application--worked. Unfortunately, the tutorial disc requires MS Silverlight One (Silverlight is a free download) on the computer's hard drive to operate: that version's no longer available. SL Two (the current version)is not recognized as valid by the tutorial disc, so it doesn't run. With no tutorial, I was left trying to figure out how to use Expression Web from the Virtual Quickstart Guide, which I bought from Amazon. I was eventually able to do a few things with Expression: it does seem like a capable product. What saved my bacon was Learning Web Design by Robbins and a basic text editor (Notepad). On the whole, I'm rather disappointed in Expression Web, and would not recommend it for a beginner.
Customer Review: Lack of security makes this a flawed product
I find myself reducing the number of stars for this product as I type this and am settling on one. Nobody should be transmitting over bare FTP any more. It's a very shoddy web host, in fact, who hasn't offered secure connections for a while now. Think about it this way, would you submit a credit card payment online if the order page wasn't secure? That's exactly what Microsoft is asking everybody who uses this product to do when uploading their web pages. This isn't some new cutting edge standard. Dreamweaver has supported FTP over SSL for at least FIVE years. All the other cute bells and whistles in this product and the time couldn't have been devoted to the most important aspect of any web publishing product? So I'm afraid I can't offer much information concerning the usability and power of this product because I just uninstalled it. If they missed this obvious of a feature, then what else is missing? I'm not going to find out. First Frontpage and now Expression Web. Microsoft just is NOT taking web design software seriously. We'll see what new name they can come up with for this same half-baked product line in three years.
